IPL 2024: releases, retentions and trades ahead of the IPL 2024 auction

The ten Indian Premier League teams have now announced their respective lists of releases and retentions ahead of the IPL 2024 season, as well as some interesting trades.

The players that have been released will of course be able to be bought back at the upcoming IPL 2024 auction on 19th December, though teams will likely go in a different direction.

Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants have the smallest amount of salary cap remaining, while Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad lead the way in terms of having the most.

Who have been released and retained ahead of IPL 2024? Team by team

Mumbai have arguably headlined this period of player movement, with Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya returning to the Wankhede in what represents a gargantuan move.

He led the Titans to their maiden title in their maiden IPL season in 2022, before guiding them to another Final in which they just fell short to Chennai Super Kings.

Jofra Archer, who was originally purchased with the hope of pairing with Jasprit Bumrah to form a formidable pace attack, has been released following continual injury struggles.

Arshad Khan, Ramandeep Singh and Hrithik Shokeen have also been released having shown glimpses of promise in the last couple of seasons.

Along with Green and Archer, the overseas slots have been opened up further following the releases of South African duo Tristan Stubbs and Duan Jansen, England's veteran all-rounder Chris Jordan and the Aussie pace duo of Riley Meredith and Jhye Richardson.

Gujarat Titans released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

The most successful franchise since their inception in 2022, the Titans will have a task on their hands replacing their captain Hardik. Most of the key players from last season have been retained, including Rashid Khan who is likely to be a candidate for the captaincy.Embed from Getty Images

Alzarri Joseph is probably the main name on the released list, having provided a number of notable moments in a Titans jersey in the last two years.

Shivam Mavi, bought for a significant amount in last year's auction, did not feature as much as was expected and he has been released along with Test 'keeper KS Bharat.

All-rounders Odean Smith and Dasun Shanaka are the other two overseas players to be released, with experienced duo Matthew Wade and Kane Williamson among those retained.

Another side to make a number of high-profile decisions are Bangalore, who again failed to follow through on the potential within the side in 2023.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel are two of the most notable players to be released, while Josh Hazlewood has also been let go, meaning a revamp of the bowling attack is seriously needed.Embed from Getty Images

That point is hammered home by the release of David Willey, Wayne Parnell, Siddharth Kaul and the trade of Shahbaz Ahmed.

Finn Allen and Kedar Jadhav have been released as well, though Green has been traded in to bolster both the batting and bowling.

Chennai Super Kings released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

It is often said 'don't change a winning team' and that is largely what Chennai have done ahead of the 2024 auction. In that regard, releasing one of the sport's biggest names will have its raised eyebrows but realistically it makes a lot of sense.

Ben Stokes, who did not play a big role in the 2023 success, had already stated that he would be opting out of the 2024 tournament so the decision was made even easier, especially given the chunk of budget that he took up.

Ambati Rayudu had been a key part of the CSK squad since his arrival from Mumbai, but he announced his retirement just before playing a triumphant part in the 2023 Final.

Overseas trio Dwaine Pretorious, Sisanda Magala and Kyle Jamieson have all been released alongside Stokes, with CSK likely to freshen up their experienced squad.

Delhi Capitals released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

There will be a lot of work to do for the Capitals in the 2024 auction, with a number of significant names being released.

Rilee Rossouw, Phil Salt and Rovman Powell have all been let go, representing a need for overseas firepower at the top of the order alongside David Warner.Embed from Getty Images

The batting looks to be a big part of a rebuild for the Capitals, with domestic talents such as Sarfaraz Khan, Aman Khan, Ripal Patel and Priyam Garg all being released along with the experienced Manish Pandey.

Talented domestic pacers Chetan Sakariya and Kamlesh Nagarkoti join Bangladesh international Mustafizur Rahman in being released.

Rajasthan Royals released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

A big focus for the Royals in the 2023 auction was an overseas all-rounder and they duly went and purchased the experienced Jason Holder. He flattered to deceive, though, and has been released.

The long-awaited signing of Joe Root was made by the Royals but again, things did not work out, albeit with limited chances given the strength of the overseas batting options.

Rajasthan were also the subject of a trade, with top order batter Devdutt Padikkal joining Lucknow and fast bowler Avesh Khan heading the other way.

Holder's West Indies teammate Obed McCoy joins a list of domestic bowlers including Murugan Ashwin, KC Cariappa and KM Asif in being released.

Punjab Kings released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

The Kings have released two of their most talented and promising domestic talents in Shahrukh Khan and Raj Bawa, both of whom having lacked the consistency or opportunity to make good on their promise.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa has also been released, with Sam Curran's underwhelming 2023 season not enough to join the Sri Lankan out the door.Embed from Getty Images

Kolkata Knight Riders released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

The Knight Riders are another side to have quite the squad overhaul, with a dozen players being released including some significant bowling talent.

New Zealand pacers Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson have joined India international duo Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav in being released, as well as Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan.

Narayan Jagadeesan came into the 2023 IPL with big expectations following his incredible List A form but could not deliver and he has joined fellow batters Mandeep Singh and Litton Das in being released.

David Wiese and Johnson Charles have also been let go, meaning KKR will have a significant amount of overseas slots to fill ahead of the 2024 auction.

Sunrisers Hyderabad released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

There was huge clamour surrounding the debut signing of England's Harry Brook following some scintillating form prior to the auction.

However, despite a brilliant hundred at Eden Gardens and a number of different positions, he could not find any such success and was eventually dropped and now released.

Adil Rashid and Akeal Hosein, Sunrisers' overseas spin options in 2023, have been released. Shahbaz, though, could prove to be a shrewd acquisition following his trade from RCB.

Lucknow Super Giants released, retained and traded players IPL 2024

There was movement for the Super Giants, though it was not as high-profile as many others. Padikkal was brought in to help strengthen the top order with Avesh heading over to Rajasthan.

Daniel Sams was probably the most notable name among those released, given some great recent performances, particularly in the t20 Blast and the Hundred in England.

Domestic stalwarts in Manan Vohra, Karun Nair and Jaydev Unadkat were all released, as well as the aforementioned trade of Shepherd to Mumbai.
