There were 15 England players involved in this year's Indian Premier League, with a number of regulars involved once more.
There was even a long-awaited debut for Joe Root along with 2022 breakout star Harry Brook. Defending champions Gujarat Titans were the only team not to have English representation within their squad.
Which England players played in IPL 2023?
Moeen Ali was retained by Chennai Super Kings and he was joined by Ben Stokes, who was one of a few major money signings in the 2023 IPL auction.
Another franchise retention saw Punjab Kings keep hold of the services of Liam Livingstone, having starred for them in 2022. Sam Curran, who was player of the tournament in the t20 World Cup, was the biggest signing in the auction and he joined Livingstone in Mohali where he first played in the IPL.
It was no surprise that Rajasthan Royals retained their star man Jos Buttler for the 2023 season and they also were the side to give Root his first chance in the IPL. David Willey turned out again for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who also brought in fellow left-armer Reece Topley.

Jofra Archer, who was signed in the 2022 auction by Mumbai Indians despite having already been ruled out of the tournament, was naturally given another year. He was replaced just after the midway point of the season by fellow Barbados-born England quick Chris Jordan.
Having been in rather poor form for the past 12 months, Jason Roy was drafted in by Kolkata Knight Riders during the tournament to bolster their top order. Mark Wood was bought by the Lucknow Super Giants, having only played one forgettable IPL game for CSK in the past.
Two more England players, alongside Root and Topley, were given the chance to experience the IPL for the first time. Brook was snapped up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in a big money move that also saw him link up with Adil Rashid. Phil Salt was purchased by the Delhi Capitals as they looked to add firepower to their batting following the news of captain Rishabh Pant's absence.
15. Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Innings: 1; Wickets: 1; Average: 14.0; Economy: 7.00
Topley started RCB's first match against Mumbai Indians and opened the bowling with Mohammed Siraj. He claimed the wicket of Mumbai's big overseas signing Cam Green midway through his second over. That was to be it, though, as a shoulder injury sustained while fielding ultimately ruled him out of the tournament.
14. Ben Stokes (Chennai Super Kings)
Innings: 2; Runs: 15; Strike rate: 107.1; 50s/100s: 0/0; HS: 8
Stokes was a sought-after name in the 2023 IPL auction and it was Chennai who secured his signature. He played in the Super Kings' opening two fixtures but failed to make an impact and didn't feature again.

He made seven from six balls in the opener against Gujarat Titans, being dismissed after nicking Rashid Khan behind. He then scored a run-a-ball eight against Lucknow Super Giants, as well as conceding 18 from his solitary over.
13. Joe Root (Rajasthan Royals)
Innings: 1; Runs: 10; Strike rate: 66.6; 50s/100s: 0/0; HS: 10
The debut of Root in the IPL was highly-anticipated, given he has been one of England's greatest players of the last decade. He had to wait a fair while to get a chance and in his first two outings he didn't even get a chance to bat, such was the dominance of the Royals' top three.
His first action came with ball in hand in his second match at Eden Gardens against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he bowled two tidy overs for 14.
His first, and in turn final, innings of the season came against RCB at Jaipur. It was not an ideal scenario to walk into, with England teammate Buttler having just been dismissed to leave Rajasthan 6-2. They were soon 20-4 and Root perished shortly after for ten off 15.
12. Adil Rashid (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
Innings: 2; Wickets: 2; Average: 28.0; Economy: 8.00
It was not Rashid's first taste of IPL action, though he is still yet to truly stamp his authority on a team. This time around, he played just twice, though Sunrisers did have a lot of variety in their strong overseas contingent.
He bowled tidily in his two outings but ultimately was not given another chance, partly due to the arrival of Heinrich Klaasen and partly the emergence and strong form of fellow leg-spinner Mayank Markande, who was a domestic option.
11. Jofra Archer (Mumbai Indians)
Innings: 5; Wickets: 2; Average: 95.0; Economy: 9.50
Archer's signing in 2022 was acknowledged as a move for 2023, given he had already been ruled out of IPL 15 through injury. The potential was enormous, with Archer lined up to join star quick Jasprit Bumrah to form part of what would have been a potentially devastating fast bowling duo.

Instead, Bumrah was ruled out of this season and Archer was unable to make any sort of impact that had been hoped for and even expected. Instead, he picked up just two wickets in five matches and went home to be replaced by Jordan midway through.
10. Chris Jordan (MI)
Innings: 6; Wickets: 3; Average: 79.0; Economy: 10.77
As mentioned above, Jordan was brought in to the Mumbai Indians side halfway through the tournament as a replacement for Archer. He did not make a huge impact but did provide some experience in the seam bowling department for what was a generally inexperienced lineup.
9. David Willey (RCB)
Innings: 4; Wickets: 3; Average: 35.0; Economy: 7.00
The all-rounder had another taste of IPL action with RCB, though he did not play as much as he may have wanted. Topley was initially preferred to him and Josh Hazlewood came in later. Topley's replacement Wayne Parnell was then the main option for RCB once Hazlewood was also ruled out.
Willey bowled well in his four matches, though, providing a tidy option at the top of the innings with his left-arm action and was only the only Bangalore bowler to bowl a maiden.
8. Harry Brook (SRH)
Innings: 11; Runs: 190; Strike rate: 123.4; 50s/100s: 0/1; HS: 100*
There was a lot of fanfare surrounding Brook prior to the 2023 IPL auction, thanks in large part to his breakout season in the Pakistan Super League and his subsequent performances in all formats for England. He was one of the biggest signings and it was SRH who got their hands on him.
He started slowly, before striking a sensational unbeaten hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders in his fourth IPL innings at Eden Gardens. From there, he only passed 20 once in the following seven innings. Indeed, he scored just 90 in ten innings outside the gleaming century.

He has shown too much potential for this to be much more than a blip, but he will likely take a lot from this generally disappointing debut IPL season.
7. Moeen Ali (CSK)
Innings: 11; Wickets: 9; Average: 21.7; Economy: 7.50
Innings: 10; Runs: 124; Strike rate: 136.3; 50s/100s: 0/0; HS: 23
Moeen played in all but one match for the victorious Chennai Super Kings, but did not have the most fruitful impact. He was typically tidy with the ball, though was often unused as he bowled just 26 overs in total.
With the bat, he generally provided small cameos without any innings of real substance. It was overall a bit of a background performance for Moeen in this year's IPL, but still there is no doubt that he did play a part in Chennai's success.
6. Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants)
Innings: 4; Wickets: 11; Average: 11.8; Economy: 8.12
Another highly-anticipated IPL participation, Wood started off in fantastic form before having to return home to be present for the birth of his second child. Prior to his early exit, Wood marked his LSG debut with a stunning 5-14 against Delhi Capitals, striking twice in the powerplay and twice in the final over.
He took three in his next match, though at a considerably more expensive rate as he conceded 49 runs. He picked up three more victims in his following two matches before heading home.
5. Jos Buttler (RR)
Innings: 14; Runs: 392; Strike rate: 139.0; 50s/100s: 4/0; HS: 95
Following an incredible IPL season in 2022 and leading England to the t20 World Cup title in Australia, Buttler would have wanted to once again stamp his impact on proceedings as one of the world's best.
He scored four half-centuries in 14 innings including a brilliant 95, but was also incredibly dismissed without scoring on five occasions. In fact, after scoring that 95 against Sunrisers at Jaipur, he did not score another run in the last three games he played.
Having scored in excess of 800 runs in 2022, Buttler could not even manage half that this time around. He often looked to lack fluency and the amount of ducks would point to some sort of lack of confidence, with his final dismissal at the hands of Kagiso Rabada showcasing a strong lack of footwork as he was pinned lbw.
4. Phil Salt (Delhi Capitals)
Innings: 9; Runs: 218; Strike rate: 163.9; 50s/100s: 2/0; HS: 87
Salt had to wait a small while to make his IPL debut, but eventually forced his way in and made a strong impact in his nine innings. He was able to stamp his typical aggressive authority on proceedings and provided a good foil to David Warner, who wasn't always at his fluent best early on.
His 87 in 45 balls against RCB was the highlight of his first season and contributed heavily to one of the Capitals' finest wins of the season as they chased down 182 with 20 balls to spare.
3. Sam Curran (Punjab Kings)
Innings: 14; Wickets: 10; Average: 48.9; Economy: 10.22
Innings: 13; Runs: 276; Strike rate: 136.0; 50s/100s: 1/0; HS: 55
The player of the tournament in the 2022 t20 World Cup, Curran was always going to be hot property in the 2023 IPL auction. It proved to be that way and then some as the all-rounder fetched the highest-ever price in IPL auction history as he signed for his former side Punjab Kings.
It may not have been the returns he would have wanted across the season, with bowling figures that took the shape of those from a few years ago. He did often bowl in important stages of the innings and was a go-to man, but could not quite replicate his t20 World Cup performances in that area.
His batting was generally solid, often given the responsibility of batting in the middle order. He scored some good runs and provided some solid performances throughout but again may be slightly disappointed with his returns. The 23-year-old also notably took on the captaincy role when Shikhar Dhawan was injured for a few games during the middle of the tournament.
2. Jason Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Innings: 8; Runs: 285; Strike rate: 151.6; 50s/100s: 2/0; HS: 61
Roy, who was not initially picked up in the 2023 auction, was drafted in by the Knight Riders despite not having been in the best form in the preceding 12 months. He put those questions to bed, though, with a string of performances that were truly akin to peak Roy.
He crushed two fifties and formed a strong and aggressive opening partnership with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Now following his decision to terminate his ECB contract to play in MLC in America, Roy can likely look forward to another IPL season in 2024 given the strength of his performances this season.
1. Liam Livingstone (PBKS)
Innings: 9; Runs: 279; Strike rate: 163.2; 50s/100s: 2/0; HS: 94
Having enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough IPL season last year, it was always going to be a tough task for Livingstone to follow it up. He made a great attempt at it, though, continuing with his fearless style that has made him a certified worldwide t20 star.
While 176 of his runs came in two belligerent innings, the other visits to the crease were full of admirable attacking intent. His bowling was not quite as effective this time round, though, bowling just seven overs and taking two wickets at a cost of 94 runs.
He was still a livewire in the field and showed he was well and truly back following an injury sustained in his Test debut last December.
